My super awesome MIL found us a “Jesus’ Miracles” felt board set at our local Goodwill store recently! I LOVE that we’ve got her eyes and ears out and about snagging these great deals with us in mind! It couldn’t have come at a better time as I was just brainstorming how I was going to fit religion into our summer journaling series! I just love it when gifts fall right into my lap!
Here is the list of miracles represented in this felt board kit:
Pictured above are the pieces representing the miracle of “Jesus walks on Water.” We used our children’s bibles as supplements to the felt board.
I let my kids pick which miracle they wanted to read about first. They chose, “Jesus Walks on Water.” We read the story first from the story board insert that came with the set. We then opened up 2 of our children’s bibles and read those accounts as well. This gave them more detail and repetition. We then had a great conversation about the miracle. Using the same Summer Journal that we made previously, we opened up to a new, clean page and began journaling. As I have done previously, I differentiated their journal prompts based on their writing ability.
I asked that my third grader explain in 6 sentences what happened in this miracle as well as what her thoughts and feelings are about it.
I asked that my 1st grader write the sentence, “Jesus walks on water” in his best handwriting. He then had to explain in at least 2 sentences what happened in this miracle and anything else he might want to say about it. He was responsible for sounding out all words on his own as well properly spelling high frequency words that he is familiar with. I then met with him to praise his efforts while also correcting his spelling. Here he is hard at work:
My Pre-K kiddo was responsible for writing the phrase, “Jesus walks on water” while using his “big boy” pencil with the proper grip.
They all then had time to draw a picture. I laid out both children’s bibles opened up to the page showing how Jesus walked on water to help give them ideas for illustrating their pictures.
Jesus Feeds the 5,000
We took 3 days to complete Jesus’ Miracles journal series using the same format of:
- Read aloud the miracle accounts in both children’s bibles and the felt board insert synopsis.
- Journal writing
Here are the felt board pieces showing “Jesus feeds the 5,000”
Both my 1st and 3rd grader working hard on their journals. You can also see our children’s bibles displaying the same miracle account.
Jesus Calms the Storm
Here is my Pre-K kiddo working hard on his journal. Notice how he resorts back to holding his crayon like a shovel when he thinks I’m not looking? That little stinker.
Big kids working on their journals: (We had to improvise with our bible as the 2nd children’s bible we have didn’t have the miracle of Jesus Calms the Storm. We used this page instead just for illustration purposes)
This completes our summer journaling series. I hope we brought you some inspiration with a side of FUN!
Enjoy the rest of your summer!
