There once was this dashing gentleman and his red-headed bride that enjoyed New Year’s Eve under the stars, sipping champagne and ringing in the new year with a midnight kiss…who am I kidding, that was never us, but at least we used to get out for New Year’s Eve. Now we ring in the new year with our rambunctious offspring of plenty.
You know what? It’s not such a terrible thing after all. Because we get to play silly games, eat kid-made treats and exchange slobbery wet toddler kisses at midnight. Not quite a fairy tale new year’s eve celebration but we wouldn’t want it any other way!
If you’re looking for ways to celebrate New Year’s Eve with your children because you’re crazy like us and you enjoy ringing in the new year with them OR perhaps your babysitter came down with a cold and your plans to have a night out are derailed. Whatever the reason, we’ve got a spectacular list of ways to celebrate with the little ones in your life!
How to Plan a New Year’s Eve Party with Kids
So, how do you have an awesome New Year’s Eve Party when you don’t have a babysitter? Easy, peasy. Follow these basic rules:
- Keep it simple. Don’t put a lot of pressure on yourself to create this big, elaborate NYE party.
- Keep it frugal. Shop the dollar store.
- Plan no more than 4 activities including a craft, a fun snack, a photo opportunity and creative countdown.
- Plan your kid countdown early so you can put the kids to bed and mommy and daddy can have a kid-free countdown to ring in the new year at midnight and maybe share a kiss!
My 4 Favorite, Frugal New Year’s Eve Kid Activities
Craft– DIY Noise Maker Shaker. What I love about this craft is not only does it give your children something creative to do but you can also use the Noise Maker Shakers for the countdown to the new year! Find my tutorial and supplies list here.
Snack– Cookies and Milk Toast. We make “countdown clock cookies,” with a ready to bake sugar cookie recipe, frosting and candies on top to create a clock shape. The kids got a kick out of using the “fancy” toasting cups to drink their milk from. Hint: they’re the plastic champagne flutes from the dollar store!
Photo Opportunity– DIY Photo Booth and Props. We just hang up a large piece of butcher paper and let the kids decorate it with a New Year’s Eve theme. I grabbed some photo props at the dollar store. {If you’d like to give your photo booth backdrop more flare, find my tips for creating an incredible DIY Photo Booth Backdrop on a budget here.}
Creative Countdown– DIY Balloon Drop. Create a simple balloon drop in just 5 steps with supplies from the dollar store. Find my tutorial here.
Now get out there and be an awesome mom and plan a frugal night of New Year’s Eve fun with your children!
