Our youngest insisted on a Superhero themed party for his recent birthday. I must say, we didn’t try to deter him one bit!
Time to DIY!
My mother-in-law and I went straight to work pinning ideas. She got out her Cricut cutter and started making banners, party decor and voila! a Superhero themed birthday party was born! *If you don’t have a cricut cutter, then grab my FREE Banner Printables HERE! It’s complete with 2 banner flag styles and letters.*
We joined forces and created a super cute, super cheap, DIY, kid-centered, Superhero party that was out of this world! We hope you can find some kidspiration here for your next birthday party!
Decor
I just LOVE this simple DIY for a party table backdrop! I used streamers and balloons from the dollar store and sticky dots for hanging. My MIL is Mrs. Incredible and part Superhero herself. She made the super cute banners for the backdrop using her Cricut! Just punch some holes, thread through some blue or red ribbon and you’re ready to hang your personalized banner! You could also grab my FREE Banner Printables HERE! It’s complete with 2 banner flag styles and letters.*
I also used the streamers and balloons to decorate the banister on our stairs!
I opted not to do helium balloons to keep the cost down and instead found this great idea for hanging balloons with streamers. It really made this party pop!
DIY Capes
Did I already mention that my MIL is a Superhero? Here’s proof. She made these adorable capes for all the kiddos at the party.
Among ALL the amazing talents she has is a talent and liking for sewing. That’s one thing that I don’t do but secretly wished I did. If you are like me and can’t or don’t sew then you might consider making these DIY capes.
On our invitation, we encouraged the guests to come dressed in their best Superhero garb. It was so cute, we had a brother and sister Batman and Batgirl duo. One of our other cousins came dressed as Batman as well and we added a Supergirl and 2 Supermen to the mix! Even the adults joined in the fun by wearing their favorite Superhero t-shirts! Here is our guest of honor’s Superman costume and the special chair that he sat in while opening his gifts!
GAMES
I am a sucker for most things homemade. Years ago I searched for a pin the nose on Mickey for a party I was doing for my son and couldn’t find one that either existed or was affordable. So, I thought…let’s make one ourselves! Ever since, we have made a DIY pin the (blank) on the (blank) for every one of our parties! My kids LOVE it! The best part is they get to help in coloring the game.
Our Superhero party was no match for this incredible Pin the “S” on Superman that my husband sketched, by hand. That’s right, he’s part Superhero too.
My kids colored the picture and the game pieces.
Here’s the finished product!
Every Superhero has a need for speed and competition. So, we decided on a pillowcase race, water balloon toss, and musical chairs for these heroes! Doesn’t get any better than some good ol’ fashioned fun and it’s also nice on the pocket book! We used old pillowcases for our race and found some colorful water balloons at the dollar store.
Don’t worry, none of our heroes were injured in the games…not even the guest of honor who took a face plant straight to the ground. What kind of mother would I be for not capturing this moment on camera!?
For our Superheroes’ final feat of courage they all had a chance to knock the head off our dinosaur piñata. That’s right, my son insisted that he have a dinosaur piñata. I thought…that’ll do. Every Superhero deserves the chance to knock the socks off a dinosaur!
I found a coupon to keep the cost down on the purchase of the piñata and then I filled it up with whatever I already had on hand from all the parties, and festivities that we recently attended. My kids eat candy for like a day and then forget about it. So, I keep it for days like these when I need a butt load of candy, gummies and suckers.
I’ve also attended parties where the moms load up piñatas with healthy stuff and little toys, etc. That too is a great idea! The reality is, whenever that piñata is busted open, kids don’t care what’s coming out…they run for it and fill up their bags!
CAKE
My MIL was so gracious as to bring the cake for the party. This year she decided to do cupcakes. They were delicious! She used her Cricut to cut out a little Superman “S” and stuck it in the top of each cupcake. She used a beautiful cupcake holder
FOOD
In our family we believe in potluck style gatherings. I LOVE this idea and we all look forward to it! We will switch up our main course occasionally but the sides are almost always the same.
We can always count on a homemade pasta salad, potato salad, family recipe salsa and chips, family recipe “dip of life” and potato chips, as well as some fruits and veggies! I am getting hungry just thinking about it! We are so blessed to have such a helpful family and it certainly helps in the party planning when each person contributes to the meal!
I hope that this blog brought some kidspiration to your next birthday party! Please post any comments or ideas you might have. I love to hear new ideas!
